She was referred to the Enfield & Haringey Quit Smoking Service by her midwife at the North Middlesex Hospital. A few days later, Nicola received a telephone call from the Smoking and Pregnancy Advisor, who arranged a first visit over the phone. During this first visit, the Smoking and Pregnancy Advisor discussed the different types of Nicotine Replacement Therapies available and set a quit date for the following week. This was also the first time that Nicola had her Carbon Monoxide reading done. For four weeks following her quit date, she received weekly visits from the Smoking and Pregnancy Advisor in her own home. Each week they would talk about how her week had been and measure her Carbon Monoxide. "One of the most enjoyable things about the visits was seeing my Carbon Monoxide levels go down - it fell from 12 down to just 1-2," said Nicola. Nicola felt that this attempt was successful because "there was support to quit smoking this time…if I hadn't had the one-to-one support I might not have been quit for as long as I have." "I would recommend the service to friends and family," she added. "The specialist advice is really good." Since giving up, Nicola has saved lots of money from not smoking. "I've spent it all on my kids - I've spent a fortune on them!" Nicola and her family are looking forward to the birth of the baby in January.
