The programme consists of seven weekly sessions, which MUST be attended:

Session 1
This is an information session where treatment is explained. Information about Zyban is given at this session, so that those wishing to use it can make an appointment with their GP.

Session 2
This session offers detailed information on the different Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products and advice on preparing to quit.

Session 3
Quit day!

Members of the group will have their last cigarettes outside before the clinic session begins. Once inside, any remaining cigarettes are disposed of and people start using their chosen NRT.

Sessions 4-7
These sessions provide quitters with weekly support throughout the main withdrawal phase of the quitting process.

From session 2, carbon monoxide readings are taken at the beginning of each session. Carbon monoxide is formed when things burn and is just one of the 4000 chemicals inhaled when smoking. By taking readings before and after quit day, quitters are able to see the huge and immediate difference to their lungs between smoking and not smoking.

On successful completion of the programme, we will write to GPs and successful quitters will need to visit their GP, who will continue prescribing NRT for a minimum further two months.

To increase the chances of your long-term success, the whole course of Zyban must be completed and NRT must be used for a minimum of three months.

All quitters who remain abstinent at the end of the treatment programme will also be invited to monthly support groups for up to one year.
