Smoke-free Haringey rewards local business for stamping out smoking
Smoke-free Haringey is launching on No Smoking Day 2006 to help
local businesses go smoke-free before the Government's summer 2007
deadline, and to celebrate those that do with a Smoke-free Haringey
Award.
As part of the launch on No Smoking Day, Wednesday 8th March,
Smoke-free Haringey will be presenting the first Smoke-free
Haringey Award to The Boom Bar in Crouch End. The local restaurant
went smoke-free in December 2005. The Awards are open to all
businesses in Haringey that have gone or go smoke-free.
Smoke-free Haringey is a joint project between Haringey TPCT and
Haringey Council, working to help local businesses become
smoke-free environments and offer support to staff to stop smoking.
Free advice and support on drafting and implementing no smoking
policies will be provided to all businesses across the borough,
encouraging Haringey employers and business owners to work ahead of
the Government's deadline.
"The positive impact that smoke-free environments will have on
improving people's health in Haringey is huge," said Richard
Sumray, Chair of Haringey TPCT. "The dangers of passive smoking
have long been common knowledge and hopefully these awards will
encourage businesses to move towards becoming smoke-free sooner
than the Government deadline. As well as improving the environment
for customers and clients, employers will be making a commitment to
improve the health of their employees. For that we want to reward
them."
"Going smoke-free is a great way that businesses in Haringey can
work with us to make a real difference to the health of their staff
and their customers," added Cllr Kate Wynne, Haringey Council
Executive member for Social Services and Health. "Everyone has
the right to breathe clean air, so it makes sense for businesses to
go for the healthy option now. Haringey Council aims to put people
first, and that means a healthy environment for all. I hope that as
many businesses as possible will join with us."
"Our service has already been involved with the development and
implementation of a number of smoke-free policies, and we want to
extend that experience to all businesses in Haringey," said Elisa
Thompson, Service Manager of Enfield & Haringey Quit Smoking
Service. "As part of that, we also want to make sure that employees
across the borough are properly supported, if they decide to stop
smoking as a result of their work place going smoke-free."
The Smoke-free Haringey Awards are available to any business with
premises in Haringey, which are smoke-free indoors and have a
smoke-free policy. Business owners can apply online at www.quitsmoking.uk.com or
can email smokefreeharingey@quitsmoking.uk.com
