New Year, New Healthy Start! New Year - it's that time of year when everyone is setting themselves new resolutions for the year to come. After indulging over the festive season, most people's resolutions include a drive to eat better, lose weight, do more exercise, but top of the list for many is stopping smoking. The New Year is seen by the majority of smokers as a fresh start and a time to finally quit. As such, it's the busiest time of year for Enfield & Haringey Quit Smoking Service, as people come along to the Specialist Clinics and get help from the network of community advisors around the borough.
Enfield and Haringey residents have been attending treatment programmes over the Christmas period, ready to quit in January, whilst others have made appointments to get started as soon as New Year celebrations are out of the way.
Hopefully lots of these smokers will be successful and able to attend next year's annual Christmas Party for Successful Quitters. This year's party was attended by the Mayor of Enfield, Cllr Bill Price, and the Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Eddie Griffith, as well as Barry Bowman from HEAL Cancer Charity.
As part of the evening's proceedings, they were presented with charity donations totalling £2,500! HEAL Cancer Charity received a cheque for £1,500, whilst £500 was donated to the special charity funds of both Enfield and Haringey Mayors respectively. All the money was raised through 'pledges' - usually the price of a packet of cigarettes - made by quitters during the seven-week treatment programme at the Specialist Clinics.
