Pharmacists on the frontline, improving the health of local residents

Many people associate pharmacists with simply dispensing prescriptions and selling medicines for the treatment of everyday ailments, such as coughs and hayfever. In fact, as qualified health professionals, these pharmacists are now providing more health care to our local communities than ever - and with 55 pharmacies in Enfield and a further 55 in Haringey, frequently open until 7pm during the week and often on Saturdays, this support is much more accessible for many of our local residents.

Pharmacists are now working under a new contract with the NHS, which allows Primary Care Trusts to commission Community Pharmacies to provide Enhanced Services.  These Enhanced Services will help address health inequalities that exist within communities.

Pharmacists are also at the forefront of our work to improve public health.   As part of this, 74 pharmacies across the two boroughs are now offering one-to-one quit smoking support.  This has already proven to be hugely successful: over a quarter of all our quitters between January and March this year were supported by trained pharmacists - that equates to 314 people.

Anyone who wants to give up smoking has a choice of treatment options offered by Enfield & Haringey Quit Smoking Service. They can either go to one of two clinics - at the North Middlesex Hospital or St. Michaels, Chase Side, or can get support from one of the many trained specialist advisors across the boroughs.  To access either of these services, smokers simplyring the freephone number 0800 085 6258 or visit www.quitsmoking.uk.com , where local residents can be booked directly onto a clinic or given details of their nearest community advisor.
