Enfield & Haringey Quit Smoking Service begin MRC Trial

Enfield and Haringey Quit Smoking Service is taking part in a clinical trial, involving smokers attending the Specialist Smokers' Clinics, to compare different treatments options for quitters.

The service is one of four centres of excellence taking part in the multi-centre trial, led by Professor Robert West at UCL and funded by the Department of Health and the Medical Research Council. The trial follows a recommendation from NICE for more research into the best treatment for smokers wanting help to quit, and will be a randomised trial comparing three treatments: Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), bupropion (Zyban), and a combination of the two.

All patients at the Specialist Smokers' Clinics will be invited to take part in the trial. Those that choose to be involved will be carefully screened for any contra-indications and then randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups. The trial is due to continue over the next two years.

The service is excited to be part of such an important research programme and is looking forward to working alongside the lead Smoking Cessation specialists in the UK.
