Enfield & Haringey Mayors join local quit smokers for Christmas Party
The Mayor of Enfield, John Egan, and Mayoress of Haringey,
Sheila Peacock, attended the party and were on hand to receive
donations of £500 to each of their chosen charities: The
Nightingale Hospice, which provides care to carers and the Haringey
Borough Swimming Club, which is promoting a healthy lifestyle to
children in the area.
Barry Bowman, a representative of the HEAL Cancer Charity, also
attended and said a few words of thanks for the £1,135 donation he
received. All the money was raised through 'pledges' -
usually the price of a packet of cigarettes - made by quitters
during the seven-week treatment programme.
Over 60 quitters attended the party, from those that have been
abstinent for a few months to those who have been quit for a few
years.
